TeachDayOne $0 Teacher Prep

Free for anyone paying for certification out of pocket. An independent project, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by ETS.

A PDF tells you what is on the test. This tells you what you got wrong.

TeachDayOne is a study environment built on the official ETS outline for 8 Praxis exams, where asking you a question and marking it is the whole point. 690 practice questions, 427 worked lessons, and a Progress tab that names the competencies costing you marks. The free ETS Study Companion is worth reading, and you should read it. It is also a PDF: the same outline in the same order every time you open it, with nothing in it that knows which parts you have not learned yet. Everything here is saved on your phone, it keeps working with no connection, and there is no paywall and no premium tier.

Pick your Praxis exam

8 official blueprints. Tap your exam code to jump straight into a practice question, or open the exam guide to read the full competency outline first.

Not sure which Praxis code your state requires? Requirements differ by state, grade band, and endorsement area. Check your state Department of Education credential checklist or ask your certification officer, who can tell you the exact 4-digit code in under a minute.
Was your code retired or renumbered? ETS retires exam numbers and reassigns them, so an old advising sheet can point at a test that no longer exists. Check the code against ETS's own page for that exam before you register.
Why this rather than the PDF

The part a PDF cannot do

The Study Companion PDF is free, it is official, and it is the right blueprint to study from. It is also a document you scroll. Everything below is something it structurally cannot do, and the reason this app exists at all.

What a static PDF of the content outline does compared with a study app built on the same outline, across the parts of studying that decide whether a candidate actually improves.
What you need to do With the PDF Here
Find out what you do not know Read every section and hope you notice the gaps. Answer questions until the wrong ones cluster, then read the Progress tab. It is sorted by accuracy, so the topic costing you marks is the first thing you see.
Practice recall instead of recognition Reread a paragraph until it looks familiar. Familiar is not recall, and the exam asks you to recall. Every question is asked before the answer is shown. Retrieval practice is the best-evidenced study method there is, and it is the one a document physically cannot do to you.
Narrow to the part you are weak in Page through looking for Law and International Business, or give up and read everything. Filter drills to one content area at a time, or to only the items you flagged to come back to. 690 questions, any slice of them, one tap.
Find out if you can finish on the clock Impossible to know. Nobody times themselves reading a document. A timed full-length run with the explanations held back until the end. Pacing is the thing that catches people out on the day, and you cannot practice it against a PDF.
Revisit the same item later and mean it Scroll back up to page 31 and hope it looks different the second time. Flag anything you got wrong and it comes back on the next run. Self-tests reshuffle the questions each time you retry, so a second attempt is a test rather than a memory.
Study somewhere without wifi Works, if you downloaded it. The phone PDF reader is still a phone PDF reader. Installs to the home screen on iOS and Android and keeps working with no connection. Your progress is saved on the phone, so it works on a train or in a school building with no signal.

The app decides what you do next and you do not have to. Open Progress and it shows you the competency with the worst accuracy; open Practice and that competency is already there waiting. A document hands you the whole outline and leaves the prioritising to you, which is the part people are worst at and least willing to do.

Studying on no budget

How to pass your certification exams on a $0 prep budget

Student teachers, paraprofessionals and career changers should not have to choose between groceries and test prep. Here is the zero-dollar study stack, and why each part of it works.

1. Read the free ETS Study Companion PDF

Never pay a third party to find out what is on the test. ETS publishes a Study Companion for every exam with the domain weights and sample items, and every exam page here links straight to it. Read it once, to know the shape of the thing. Then put it down, because a PDF cannot tell you which of the 427 competencies you have not learned.

2. Work the 427 competencies here

Read the worked lesson for one competency, drill the 690 questions (74 transcribed from ETS, 616 authored against the official outline), and go back to the ones Progress tells you are still weak. That loop is the part the PDF cannot do for you.

3. Claim your free ETS Interactive Practice Test

When you register for your actual Praxis exam on the ETS site, they include one free official practice test. Save it for two weeks before test day as your dress rehearsal.

What test day is actually like

Surveys of pre-service teachers keep finding the same thing: the thing they worry about most is not the subject content. It is walking into the testing center without knowing the shape and pace of the exam. Here is the specification for all 8 of them.

It is pacing, not difficulty, that catches people out. Most candidates lose marks by grinding one hard item and then running out of clock on easy ones. Answer what you know first, mark the rest, come back with whatever is left.

If you have sat this before and it did not go well, the useful part of that is usually the mechanics rather than the content. You now know how long the test runs, how many questions are on it, and roughly how long you get on each one. That is a third of the exam handled before you walk in.

Back to your exam

Inside the study studio

What TeachDayOne actually gives you

Eight things to work with, built for people studying between classes, shifts and family life. No roadmap and no beta.

  1. 690 practice questions, every one with an explanation.

Single answer, multiple answer, numeric entry, and constructed response. The explanation is there whether you got it right or wrong, because a lucky guess teaches you nothing.

  2. A worked lesson for each of the 427 competencies.

Key terms, core points, worked examples, the traps the exam is known for, and a self-check. Not a summary of a summary.

  3. Progress broken down by competency.

Not one percentage. The number that matters is the name of the topic you keep getting wrong.

  4. Drills filtered the way you want them.

Everything, one content area at a time, or only the items you flagged to come back to.

  5. A timed full-length run.

The whole exam, on the clock, with the explanations held back until the end so you cannot peek.

  6. A self-test for each competency.

Five questions, reshuffled when you retry, and a mark for whether you have it.

  7. Works on your phone with no connection.

It installs to the home screen on iOS and Android and works on a train or in a school building with no signal.

  8. No account required.

Progress lives in this browser. Signing in is optional and adds cross-device sync and nothing else.

One exception, stated plainly. The written-response section of 5622 is case histories and a scoring rubric, not a bank of competencies. There is no outline behind it, so there is nothing to teach from one. The app shows you the cases and the scoring bands and does not pretend otherwise.
Evidence-based learning

How to actually study for one of these

Five things backed by research on retrieval practice and test anxiety. They are short because a person revising between a placement and a night shift is not going to remember seven principles.

The whole method, with a week-by-week loop you can keep up →

  1. Do not just reread.

Reading over material feels like studying and is the weakest use of your time. Recognition is not recall, and the exam asks you to recall.

  2. Answer questions from memory, then check.

Retrieval practice, meaning self-testing, is one of the best-evidenced study methods there is. It beats rereading, restudying, and rereading your notes.

  3. Read the explanation either way.

Right or wrong, the explanation is where the learning happens. Wrong answers especially, because those are the ones you got lucky on.

  4. Come back tomorrow.

Spacing beats cramming. The same hour split across five days is worth more than five hours on one night.

  5. Sit one timed run before test day.

Full length, timed, no pausing. Pacing is a skill and it is learned by doing, not by thinking about doing.

One reassurance worth having. Practice questions in this app are not the real exam, and your score on them is not your Praxis score. Use them to find the competencies you do not know yet. That is the whole job.

Where the content comes from

Every question comes from ETS or from the bodies that set the standards, and it says which

The thing you most want to know before spending study hours here is whether the material is right. Here is the answer, with the counts behind it.

The full breakdown, per exam, with a link to each ETS document →

Provenance across all 8 exams: which parts of the material come straight from published ETS Study Companions, which are written for this app against the standards that govern the subject, and how to tell them apart.

The label sits on the question itself in the app, so you are never guessing which kind you are looking at. All 8 exams here have their outline titles transcribed from ETS's own documents.

Each exam page names the ETS document its outline came from and links straight to ETS’s own PDF. Reading that alongside the page is the fastest way to check this claim, and it costs nothing.

We keep ETS questions, rationales and case histories out of the marketing pages. They are in the app, labelled, where you asked for them.

What this is not. TeachDayOne is not affiliated with ETS, and nothing on this site is ETS material. Praxis® and ETS® are registered trademarks of Educational Testing Service. The Study Companion and the practice test that comes with your registration both come from ETS, and both are worth your time.
What it costs

$0, and nothing to cancel later

$0. Not a seven-day trial of a paid thing.

TeachDayOne costs nothing. There is no paid tier, no paywall, no trial and no advertising. No account is required, and no email address is collected, so there is no card anywhere in the flow and no countdown to anything, because nothing here is running out.

Prep in this category is usually a subscription, which is a decision you have to keep making every month. This is the one that does not need a decision. The arithmetic is yours to do, and the number is zero.

Checking our claims

How to check us, since we have nothing to sell

We are not going to put a photo of a smiling person on this page and call them a user. They would be a stock photograph, because we have no users to photograph. Here is what you can check instead.

  1. Every number on this page is generated from the same files the app ships.

Add a question to an exam, rebuild, and this page changes. None of it is typed in.

  2. The app tells you which build you are running

With a timestamp in the corner. If something is broken, the report identifies the build.

  3. Nothing you answer leaves your browser.

There is no analytics script and no result is ever sent to a server, so grading keeps working with the network off. That is also why we cannot tell you anyone's score, and therefore why there will never be a pass rate here.

  4. Each exam names the document it was built from

And links to ETS's own page for it. Put the two side by side.

  5. Every competency in the app has at least one practice question.

That is not a boast, it is a check the build runs and fails on.

  6. Every question carries its provenance label

At the item level, so you can always tell which of the two kinds you are looking at.

We have no testimonials, no star ratings, no user count and no pass rate, because we do not collect results and we have never counted users. If we ever do, we will print the number and how many people it was counted from.

Optional AI study partner

About Ms. Kaya, the AI tutor

She is optional and she does nothing until you turn her on. She is free, and so is everything else on this page.

  • What she does.

Answers questions about the competency you are reading at the time, cites the competencies it drew on, and streams the reply. She works from the outline rather than from generic study advice.

  • What it costs you.

Nothing. Ms. Kaya is free, like the rest of this app. There is a daily limit on how many questions she will answer, so that one person cannot use up everyone else's access.

  • What she is not.

A source of truth. The outline and the items labelled ETS are the source of truth. Where she and the outline disagree, the outline is right and she is wrong.

  • What you lose without her.

Nothing. Every question, every explanation and every self-test works without her. She is the one part of this app you could delete and keep the rest.

Common questions

Questions future teachers actually ask

Is TeachDayOne really free, or is this the free bit?

Yes to both, and the second half is the useful part. There is no paid bit. The whole app is the free bit: all 690 questions, all 427 competencies, progress tracking, the timed runs and the offline app. There is no premium tier to upgrade to, no trial that expires, and nothing to buy now or later. If a page about Praxis prep is trying to sell you something, this one is not it.

How do I become a certified teacher on a tight budget?

Registration for a Praxis test already runs $130 to $170+ out of pocket before background checks and state licensing fees, so a recurring prep subscription is worth checking carefully. First, download the free official ETS Study Companion PDF for your exam code. Second, use the free interactive practice test ETS includes when you register. Third, drill all 690 questions and 427 worked lessons here in TeachDayOne for $0. If you want to see the paid options priced against this one, the pricing page is at /pricing/.

Are these real ETS questions?

Partly, and the app tells you which part. 74 of the 690 questions are transcribed from published ETS Study Companions, and they carry ETS's own answer rationales. Those are labelled ETS in the app. The other 616 are written for this app against the official content outlines, and are labelled Authored. All 8 exams here have their outline titles transcribed from ETS's own documents. A score in TeachDayOne is not a Praxis score, and nothing here predicts yours.

Is this official ETS material?

No. TeachDayOne is an independent project, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by ETS or the Praxis® trademark holders. Praxis® and ETS® are registered trademarks of Educational Testing Service. For the authoritative version, the Study Companion and the free practice test that comes with test registration are both worth having, and both come from ETS.

Which Praxis exam do I take?

That depends on your state, your grade band and your programme, and it is not ours to answer. Your state's education agency publishes the list of required exams for each credential, and your programme coordinator will know it in about a minute. If a code you were given is not on the list above, ETS probably changed it, and there is a section further down for exactly that.

I failed one of these before. Is this going to be different?

We are not going to promise you anything, because we do not know your result and neither does this app. What it does give you is the mechanics. You get how long the test runs, how many questions are on it, and how long you have on each one. You also get a per-competency list of the specific topics you are getting wrong. Those are facts you do not have yet if you sat the test without them.

Can I use it on my phone? Does it work offline?

Yes to both. It installs to the home screen on iOS and Android and keeps working with no connection. Your progress is saved on the phone, so there is nothing to sign into and nothing to lose if you clear it.

Is my data safe?

Your progress stays in your browser. There is no analytics script, no advertising network and no result is sent to a server, which means nothing about your performance leaves your device. An account is optional and adds cross-device sync and nothing else. Ms. Kaya only ever sees the question you type into her.

Do I need the AI tutor, and does it cost anything?

You do not need it, and it costs nothing. Ms. Kaya is free, needs no key and no account of your own, and works within a daily limit. Every question, explanation and self-test works without her.

Can I see how I am doing by competency?

Yes, and that is the main number in the app. Progress breaks your accuracy down by competency and by content area, so you can see which part of the outline to study next rather than just an overall percentage. One honest detail: the written responses on 5622 are never scored by the app. They are recorded as attempted, and shown separately from your multiple-choice accuracy. They are 25% of that exam, and folding them into one number either way would tell you something false.

Using the free option is not a compromise. If you are studying on a tight budget, you are not the person the paid tier was built for. This is the whole thing, it costs nothing, and the free practice test you get with test registration is worth having too. Use both.
