What test day is actually like

The part that unsettles most candidates before a Praxis is rarely the content. It is not knowing the shape of the thing. Here is the whole picture, with the per-question pacing worked out from each exam's real time limit.

  • Praxis 5101 Business Education120 questions · 2 hours · about 1 minute a question
  • Praxis 5191 Early Childhood Education100 questions · 2 hours 30 minutes · about 1 minute 30 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5234 Middle Level English75 questions · 3 hours · about 2 minutes 24 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5244 Middle Level Math100 questions · 3 hours · about 1 minute 48 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5411 Elementary ELA100 questions · 3 hours · about 1 minute 48 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5412 Elementary Math100 questions · 2 hours 30 minutes · about 1 minute 30 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5622 PLT K-674 questions · 2 hours · about 1 minute 37 seconds a question
  • Praxis 5652 Computer Science100 questions · 3 hours · about 1 minute 48 seconds a question
  • Most candidates do not lose marks because the material is hard. They lose them on pacing: grinding one hard item, then running out of time on easy ones later. Practise the clock as well as the content.

    Why it costs nothing

ETS charges $24.95 for one full practice test per exam. Most prep courses cost more than the exam fee. The free options are usually a fifteen-question teaser or a form that emails you into a sales sequence. That puts real practice out of reach for the people it is meant to help most: student teachers, career changers, and anyone paying for certification out of pocket.

So this is free, with no premium tier to upgrade to later. It runs in your browser, your progress stays on your device, and the code is public, which means you can read how your answers are scored instead of trusting it.

How to actually study for this

The research on how people learn is consistent on one point: the method that works best is the one that feels least like studying. It is also the one anxious test-takers skip, which is why the practice here is built to be easy to start and impossible to fail.

    1. Do not just reread.Reading over material feels like studying and is the weakest use of your time. Recognition is not recall, and the exam asks you to recall.
    2. Answer questions from memory, then check.Retrieval practice, meaning self-testing, is one of the best-evidenced study methods there is. It beats rereading, restudying, and rereading your notes.
    3. Read the explanation either way.Right or wrong, the explanation is where the learning happens. Wrong answers especially: those are the ones you got lucky on.
    4. Come back tomorrow.Spacing beats cramming. The same hour split across five days is worth more than five hours on one night.
    5. Sit one timed run before test day.Full length, timed, no pausing. Pacing is a skill and it is learned by doing, not by thinking about doing.

One reassurance worth having. Practice questions in this app are not the real exam, and your score on them is not your Praxis score. Use them to find the competencies you do not know yet. That is the whole job.

Free Praxis practice questions: common questions

What is the cheapest way to pass a Praxis exam?

Praxis Studio costs nothing and covers 8 exams with 620 practice questions. ETS's own full practice tests cost $24.95 each, and commercial prep courses run into the hundreds. You do get one free interactive practice test when you register for the real exam, so register once and use that alongside a free tool like this.

Is Praxis Studio free and open source?

Yes, and it will stay that way. There is no premium tier, no account requirement and no advertising. The code is MIT licensed and public, so anyone can verify how questions are scored or contribute new material.

    Which Praxis exams are covered?

Business Education: Content Knowledge (5101), Early Childhood Education (5191), Middle Level English (5234), Middle Level Mathematics (5244), Elementary English Language Arts (5411), Elementary Mathematics (5412), Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6 (5622), Computer Science (5652).

Is Praxis Studio official ETS material?

No. It is an independent open-source project with no affiliation to ETS. Outline text and sample items from published ETS Study Companions are labelled as transcribed, and everything else is authored against ETS’s public content outline and labelled as such. For the authoritative version, buy the Study Companion from ETS.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Everything works signed out, which is the default. Progress is stored in your browser. An account is optional and adds nothing but cross-device sync.

How should I actually study for a Praxis exam?

Work the content outline first: read each competency in the app, then drill its questions until the mistakes are gone. Use the self-test to find weak competencies rather than chasing an overall score, then go back to the outline for those specific sections. Finally, sit one timed practice test under real conditions, since pacing is where most candidates lose points.

    How this is built

Questions are scored by code you can read, not by a service you have to trust. Written responses on PLT K-6 are never scored by the app, and are shown separately from your multiple-choice accuracy, because folding them into one number would tell you something false. Everything runs client side.
